Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway
Known as the Friendly Line in the Cotswolds, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway (GWR) is a steam and diesel heritage railway that runs for some 14 miles between Cheltenham Racecourse to Broadway via Winchcombe and Toddington. It uses part of the route of the former Great Western Railway’s main line from Birmingham to Cheltenham via Stratford-upon-Avon. The line was closed by British Rail in 1979 and the track lifted. However, since 1981 the railway’s volunteers have restored the line together with the platforms, buildings, steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock.

Broadway Railway Station
On Good Friday, 30 March 2018, the golden age of steam returned to Broadway, 58 years after the last train pulled out of its picturesque old station. Broadway's station was demolished by British Rail in 1963. Since 2009 volunteer workers of the GWR have been painstakingly rebuilding the station and restoring it to its former glory.

The new station now forms the line’s northern terminus. The main station building on Platform 1 is in keeping with the original. It is fully operational and includes a booking hall, toilet facilities and a refreshment room. There is a GWR shop located in a cabin on Platform 1 which is open on all operating days. The shop stocks a range of gifts, books and railway memorabilia and is managed and staffed by an enthusiastic band of volunteers.

Platform 2 has been largely constructed but is still a worksite and is not yet available for public use. A footbridge connecting the two has been built. The signal box is complete, and the railway’s signalling engineers are engaged in connecting up the signals and points.

Train Services
The railway runs scheduled train services and several special events between March and October, and also between Christmas and the New Year. Santa Specials operate in the run-up to Christmas. Full details of timetables and special events can be found on the railway’s website ( www.gwsr.com). Tickets can be purchased in advance on the website, or on the day of travel at one of our stations.

At Broadway station yard there are a limited number of spaces for Blue Badge disabled users. If these are full there are more Blue Badge spaces at Toddington (about 6 miles away) where you can also board GWR trains.

Parking in Broadway
There is a pay-and-display car park on the opposite side of the main road under the railway bridge, less than a 5-minute walk from the station entrance. (N.B. The car park is managed by Wychavon council [tariffs here] and it is not the railway’s car park). It has gantries at either end of the car park set to 2.05m in height. If you pay for 10 hour’s parking there you will receive a voucher for £3 redeemable at the station booking office against one railway ticket. Please note that the voucher can only be redeemed against a full fare ticket purchased at the booking office on the day and is not valid for special events.

There are 4 Swarco Type 2, 6.9kW electric vehicle charging points in this car park.
